 An all-expense paid workshop for journalists

Sept. 26-27, 2013

Hofstra University, Long Island, NY

Supported by the McCormick Foundation in cooperation with the Poynter Institute, this two-day training institute will help journalists from all platforms strengthen their coverage of the growing problem of suburban poverty.  Faculty from academia, think tanks and the national press will help participants:

  • Explore the changing demographics of poverty in America and the special challenges of suburban poverty;
  • Understand the difference between the federal poverty level and effective poverty;
  • Navigate the tangle of social services agencies and nonprofits charged with alleviating suburban poverty;
  • Find new resources for covering such topics as child poverty, the foreclosure crisis, and the plight of the working poor;
  • Find individuals to put a face on the problem;
  • Discover pockets of good news and partnerships that are making a difference.
